Coaster

coaster – a small piece of wood, plastic, or other material that you put a glass or cup on to protect a surface from heat or liquid

Question: Is a coaster is a kind of mat? Is it okay if I say “cup mat” or “glass mat”? Will people understand that?

Thank you!

Coaster is the right term. Native speakers don’t say cup mat or glass mat.

I don’t usually think of a coaster as a kind of mat. A mat is usually placed on the floor, unless it’s a “place mat,” then it goes under a plate on the table. Although “mat” has a lot of additional definitions.

In the UK, the printed cardboard coaster your beer is served on when you go to the pub is called a beer mat.
Some people actually collect them.

Fancier coasters are made of sandstone with cork backing.
