[bug] sentence edit no longer works, why are you actively working against user interests?

The last few days when I want to edit a sentence in sentence mode, the editor refuses to allow insertion of anything. When I position the cursor at the end of the line, and press backspace, in stead of deleting the last character, the following happens:

  1. backspace does nothing.
  2. pressing done and returning to edit mode (a few times).
  3. Suddenly the backspace works, but in stead of deleting the last character, it delete a large part of the word.

Can you please repair this evil? Oh, and this time, can you give some feedback after saying “we will look into it” or “The team will have a look”?

It is really quite annoying that you keep changing stuff without announcement or explanation and ruining stuff that worked before the change. This is another example of your actively working against the interest of your users, actively not testing, not announcing, not communicating and finally completely ignoring requests to fix a bug i.e. no feedback after your “we will look into it”.

I just tried and am not able to reproduce the issue. When I edit the sentence, position the cursor at the end of the line and press backspace, the last character gets deleted, as I would expect.

I had issues with input a few weeks ago that turned out to be an issue with my trackball, which I first considered to be an LingQ issue due it beeing most significant their. Can you rule out issues with your keyboard?

Besides that I second the general statement towards the general communication and implementation “strategy”.

Possible, but unlikely. An error in the keyboard (no trackball) would show in more applications. For example using the same editing functions in Rooster, gives no problems with respect to editing. None of the other applications I use show any editing problems.

Yes, announcement of changes and specification of changes would really be an improvement. At least one would know what might have caused the problem. And the next step is of course retraction and correction of faulty changes.

Back around June/July, they said they would make an effort to improve communication. This lasted about… a week, then they reverted back to their old ways and the infamous “we will look into it”. This does them a disservice because they are clearly struggling to keep track of all the bugs/malfunctions and cannot keep their head above water. With a more robust organisation, they would make life easier for them too.

Thanks for the addition, I fully agree. Current tactic is self-defeating.

I tried as well with no issue. Google Chrome browser. What browser are you using? On Mac or Windows? i.e. anything that will help them research an issue. Or it could be a key going bad on the keyboard? Perhaps some crumbs stuck in it? (my problem usually lol). Good luck.

I am using firefox under linux, have been doing so for years. Because you have no issue, I tested under Chrome as well and had the same result, except for the backspace that appears to work. After backspacing over 2 characters, and re-entering them, I still cannot add anything. Same goes for inserting in between, not possible.

Both in sentence mode and edit lesson, the same problems appear. Something blocks entry of data in edit mode.

No, the keyboard is not the problem. It works perfectly in all other apps. Just Lingq. And, as I never eat at the keyboard, crumbs are not an issue  .

Strange. When you are editing the sentence, are you doing it from “reader mode” under “sentence mode” and the choosing “edit sentence” from the 3 dot menu? Or are you editing a sentence from the “edit lesson” view?

Are you editing the content itself? or updating/adding a translation of the sentence?

I did go in sentence view from reader mode, then edit sentence. I backspaced a word and a period out. I then re-added the word and period. I added a another word and period and saved. It saved. I then went back in and removed the extra word and saved.

Just wondering if I’m doing anything different from what you are essentially doing.

I asked our team to look into this and try to reproduce the issue on their end.

Thanks. I hope the cause can be found.

You’re right, it has on many occasions been unusable, but they make money so I guess everything is fine.

This morning I experienced that this phenomenon does not occur everywhere. The lesson it does occur in was imported from youtube recently and the youtube video had subtitles. That may be a clue as to why this occurs. The lesson is private, link is “Login - LingQ”.

The lesson where I can edit is imported from a sound file with AI generated text. I added the youtube video after. The lesson is private, link is “Login - LingQ”.

Could the team reproduce the error?

@gbonnema Not so far. Our testers and I tried to find a way to reproduce this error, but we were unable to. We’ll keep trying.
