Nah you’re right. I’m the same as you. I can understand French at a pretty high level including most youtube videos (though not movies or all TV shows on netflix) and I can read pretty much anything. But my speaking is pretty elementary and basically a direct spanish to french translation. If I didn’t have spanish I doubt I could speak at all.
I think speaking is a different skill than understanding (listening or reading) so you just need to practice. I suspect you can practice without speaking to someone else but you have to do it. This guy Robin McPherson is a polyglot who learns languages without ever speaking to anyone. He talks about it here:
