Continuing issues with deleting courses. I have 3 courses that I have tried to delete multiple times for several weeks. Most of them deleted āsomeā lessons but not all. All of them show white + sign and so I have to try to āaddā them to continuing studies and then try deleting again. It just spins and spins forever - so I have to cancel that tab and reopen. These are all books that I loaded myself. Interestingly they do not show up in the current version 4 - just in 5.
Should be this week or next.

Are you saying some of the lessons are still in Continue Studying as well? But, + buttons are white?

To clarify. Since I have several books there and they have many lessons each, I am uncertain about ālessonsā with white + but the ācoursesā have white + signs. The list of ālessonsā is so long, I always have to click courses in order to see my list of books - list of lessons is meaningless to me.
I just tried something different. One of the books only had two lessons. I tried deleting the course - it failed. So then I edited the course and was able to delete the two lessons. Then I was able to delete the course.
A second book had about 15 remaining courses. I tried the same thing - edit course, click all lessons to delete them. Patiently waited a few minutes and when it came back it had deleted about 3 lessons only - but not all.
Tried deleting all remaning courses. This time none were deleted after āSavingā stopped and control was returned to me. So I tried deleting only 1 lesson and nothing happens. Still not deleted. Or so I thought. Strangely when I view the course there is only 1 lesson left, but if I go back to edit again I still see a dozen lessons.
Retrying again and again. I have managed to delete the courses finally - a few lessons at a time. I am now of the opinion that there is a slow communication between the website and the backend - and that sometimes the long deletion times for many lessons (or entire course) gets broken. Hopefully when this goes live there will be a much faster response and maybe this issue will resolve itself.
BTW I just noticed the column when editing called āIn Useā. Some lessons say 2 some 1. But none are in use currently since they are private. Maybe the heading should say ācompletedā or āusedā. āIn useā suggests they are in use at the moment.
Hi Mark! Iāve noticed some things Iād like to bring up reference the Web beta. Some of them may be just because I havenāt found a setting to adjust; please let me know if so.

Iāve had issues uploading and sharing lessons. The system most recently (today) wouldnāt let me share a lesson because it said I needed at least two tags. I had four tags, then bumped it down to two, and it still wouldnāt work. I had to go to the previous version for it to work. For reference: the tags were ones where I typed something in, then selected an option from the automatic drop down menu.

Highlighting phrases. In the previous build, the system only lets you highlight up to nine words before it stops highlighting. In the beta, you can highlight as many as you want, and there is no indication (that Iāve noticed) when you hit nine words. This is frustrating, since the system wonāt translate more than nine words at a time and thereās no indication youāve hit nine.

Clicking on an unknown word. When I click on an unknown word, the very top of the panel is a place for me to type my own definition, followed by dictionaries, followed by translations from other users. Is there a reason the translations arenāt at the top? It trips me up when Iām trying to quickly glance at words as I listen to the audio and the top of the panel is a blank space, and I have to scroll down to get the definitions to see if I knew the word or not.

Selection frequency. In the old version, the system gave you a number count that Iāve always assumed was how many other people selected that translation. While not 100%, Iāve found that helpful to narrow down the possibilities. Now itās just a ā+ā note next to every option, so itās unclear how popular the various translations are. Is there a way to toggle this?
Aside from that, I have some questions about searching and the feed, or some things that may be helpful to add:

Lesson feed, part 1. Maybe a possibility to block either entire courses or uploaders. As an example for Russian, Iāve benefitted greatly from Evgeny40 and learned a ton of Russian from his material, but now Iām trying to get more exposure to other voices, other speech rhythms and speeds, etc, so at least for now Iād like to filter his stuff out completely from my searches or lesson feed.

Lesson feed, part 2. I seem to increasingly find shared lessons where the text and the audio arenāt particularly close. I usually go in and just edit the lesson to match the text and the audio if itās a few things here and there, but if itās rampant throughout the lesson, I feel like there should be a āthumbs downā option or something to flag the lesson for other users. Iām not saying that a lesson like that needs to get removed from the feed altogether or sent to some kind of LingQ content QC board, but just an indicator to other users that this lesson might be frustrating or have serious audio to text mismatches.

Searches. As best as I can tell, when I do a word search, it only brings up a lesson if the word is in the title. Is it possible to add a search function so that, if I have a specific word I want more exposure to but that doesnāt come up in the titles, LingQ can search the text of lessons as well?

Importing Youtube videos. When LingQ imports Youtube videos, it keeps the timestamp line breaks from the video. Is there a way to toggle that off? I understand that this will create a wall of text basically, but itās way easier for me to go in and manipulate and correct the text, as well as highlight phrases over line breaks, if the line breaks are taken out. Maybe a toggle button to turn that off within the lesson importer, or to auto-remove the timestamps and attached paragraph breaks?

- I donāt think weāre likely to do anything here Iām afraid. Phrase selection functionality is really meant for creating shorter 2 to 5 word phrases. If you want sentence translations, we recommend sentence view.
- We have organized the blue widget differently in v5. We think it shows the progression more clearly to new users to offer the dictionaries first. And, still gives plenty of opportunity to review the popular meanings.
- We no longer show the popularity as it just encouraged selection of the meanings that got popular early and was something that required explanation. The fact is users should review all popular meanings to find the one right for them or check the dictionaries.
Otherwise, we are going to be looking into ways of customizing your library results as you suggest. This kind of thing will happen post launch as we continue improving. Both, controlling providers who appear and flagging poor quality content are in our future plans. We are unlikely to enable search to search the lesson text. We have had this in the past and it doesnāt lead to great results. However, some way to enable finding other contexts for specific words is something we have had in the past and may add back again at some point.
The timestamp feature is a popular feature and allows the audio to play the original audio in Sentence View. We are unlikely to offer an option to disable this. You would have to click to Regenerate the Lesson and then copy and paste the updated text back.

There can be a delay when making changes in the Library. Results are cached to load more quickly so changes do need to be propagated. Weāll keep trying to optimize this.
In use means that somebody has taken that lesson.

Thanks for the feedback! I noticed one more thing last night after I posted:
On my Brave browser (with the side panel widget pinned to be displayed), when I hit my daily lingq goal, the whole page of text shifted left slightly so that the left side of the text from the page was off screen, and the left four or so letters of the next page was hanging on the right side of the current page. This happened both in Russian and Spanish until I finished those lessons. Subsequent lessons were fine. Iāll experiment with it a little more today and provide more detailed information, and Iāll see if I can capture a screenshot. It didnāt render the lessons unusable, but itās definitely a glitch.
Reference your feedback:
I understand the concern with searching the body of the lessons as opposed to the title and how that can get unwieldly or lead to less useful results. Iām not sure how it was implemented in the past, but if it returned every instance of the word in the lesson text, that could be terrible. If each lesson were to only appear once regardless of the wordās frequency in the lesson, I feel like that could be more approachable, especially if the lessons were rank-ordered based on how many times the word appeared in the lesson. Just an idea to consider. Maybe add a button we could select or deselect that says āalso search lesson text.ā
Iāll experiment with your recommendation reference sentence view vs highlighting nine words. What Iāve been doing is occasionally highlighting a long phrase to confirm it means what I thought it meant, then move on. I never save them, just use it for confirmation or to get a better perspective on an unclear word in the phrase. Iāll try the other way.

Is there any way to have the word popup stick to the right of the text like before? I much prefer that rather than having it jump around all over the place, covering the text.

Hi,
Some lessons are still marked as having X% of blue words despite having been duly completed. When I check the vocabulary list, there are no new words there.
I seem to remember this issue had been fixed a few weeks ago, but it is here again.
I think only being able to watch videos in sentence views with the words there is a major disadvantage, which actually has kept me using the old lingq this whole time. Itās just such a better set up the old way that the new way makes it more problematic.
Also, why canāt the title of what Iām looking at always be on the top like the old lingq? If I have multiple tabs open at once how am I supposed to know what Iām looking at? This way I canāt click on the title and see how much % I am done with the course, plus it looks uglier and is harder to use.
(my only complaints, everything else looks great)
Not sure what you mean exactly but you can watch the video in both page and sentence view. You may not realize that you can minimize the popover player in page mode. Look for that control on the video popup.
You can see the title by hovering on the progress bar in the reader. As this is information you need to see rarely we felt the benefit of quieting down the screen made up for the extra mouse action you need to take.

This does seem to come up. We are aware and trying to deal with it. There are situations where words are added or edited by other users or the content owner which can cause this to happen after the fact too.

We canāt really worry about non mainstream browsers at the moment Iām afraid. As for the other, weāll keep that in mind as we move forward.
