If I press the ABC button in the app I cannot search for English words only for words in the target language.

The other thing I notice is that when I filter on known words it tells me 1214. When I look in the known words section of the challenge I’m doing it says 80/3185 and from that I guess the challenge is suggesting I learn 3185 - 1214 words?

The challenge is challenging you to learn 3185 words… your total known words is what you see on the main page. And yes, the ABC is not a dictionary or sum, it is just the words you have learned so far in your target language.
