you have the same predicament which I had . i am also learning German so I feel your problem as well . I just posted the same 1 and 2 problems which I also had yesterday. The option to save a few words / phrases / grey shading area was very helpful which saved a lot of our time. Mark commented on my post that they may consider in future to bring this feature Back but I think a lot of people loved that feature and I’m glad I’m Not the only one who’ was/is panicked by its absence in this new version . i will not be surprised if other people who used to like the said feature come and post here regarding it.
I notice other three points which might be bugs or is not very convenient for me.
7. You-tube videos
I listen to you-tube videos and after I save words and phrases, I try to open them, but I can’t do that. I’m not sure why it happens, but is that related to the “legacy”? The courses with which I have troubled seem to be marked with “legacy.”
8. The dictionary order
Even when I have set the order of dictionaries, it is completely changed on the next day, and I fix the order as the same as yesterday, which is annoying.
9. keyboard (trivial)
When I touch my saved words or phrases in two times, I can go into memo boxes, but due to the keyboard, I need to slide my screen or click the keyboard button to close the keyboard. I want to read the memo straight away.
- We will see if this is possible in future although nothing is likely to happen soon. In terms of partial sentences, in the web beta now and hopefully soon here in the app too, you will be able to edit imported lessons and make those kind of changes to the sentence splits yourself.
- We have removed the examples for all LingQs in v5. They just clutter things up and almost always were ignored by users.
- You should be able to swipe down to refresh the Library screen. Closing and re-opening is not required
- You can just scroll down to see all categories in the Library. You may want to adjust your level settings since those can impact which lessons are shown and therefore which shelves. We will probably increase customization here over time.
- If you mean the auto text to speech for lessons without audio, yes, we do need to add some explanation. We will look into that.
- Enter saves changes. That is more convenient for most users who just want to make changes and close. Just keep typing if you have more to add. The reality is that LingQ is set up for shorter meanings and fewer notes. If you want more detailed word information and notes, you will have to work within the limitations in the system I’m afraid.
I should also point out that the new iOS 5.0 app only supports iOS 15 and higher. I’m not sure how you’re using it on iOS 7 or if that is even possible. Or, are your comments here related to the web?
Are these issues from the web or iOS?
Please could you elaborate the first point? like i also have issues with partial sentences in a imported lesson , how can I correct them ?
I’ve been using the new app for a couple of days now. I think it’s really good; much better reading experience than the previous version. Thanks dev team.
In the web beta you can click Edit Lesson and see all sentences in the lesson. If you click on a sentence you can edit it. You can copy and paste the second part of the sentence into the first part and then delete the second part.
This isn’t a bug, just a suggestion to improve the experience with the app.
Sentence mode requires a lot of horizontal swiping. I’m finding that maybe 10% of the time, I don’t swipe horizontally enough, and instead of advancing to the next sentence, the app registers a vertical swipe and just pushes the sentence up/down a bit.
The old iOS app was a lot more forgiving in this situation because you couldn’t push the text upward.
I think if you could eliminate the ability to push sentence mode text upward, it would result in fewer mis-swipes and less hand strain. From my end as a user, I don’t see any negative consequence of doing this.
To dismiss the definition pop-up, I’m able to swipe down on it pretty much anywhere, but not where the word or phrase itself is shown in the pop-up. If I swipe down on or near the word/phrase (ie the highlighted area here: https://i.imgur.com/ym5rjWK.png ), then the pop-up does not get dismissed.
Somehow I run into this problem very frequently, and it’s not something I’ve gotten used to. Here are some reasons why this behavior is so bothersome:
- The selected word or phrase can vary in length, which means that the disallowed swipe area also varies in size. So I can’t train my finger to always swipe on a certain part of the pop-up, because if I select a large word or phrase, then that area will suddenly become off-limits.
- If the word or phrase is so long that it runs beneath the gray bar at the top of the pop-up – which I’m sure is meant to tell users to “swipe here to dismiss” – then it becomes tricky even to swipe down on that bar to dismiss the pop-up. (If you swipe down a millimeter too low, it won’t work.)
- There is no obvious reason why swipe-to-dismiss should not be allowed in this area, since tapping (or swiping) on the word itself provides no alternative functionality. Whereas the other areas that ignore swipes (the TTS icon in the upper right, and the status icons at the bottom) do provide additional functionality, so disallowing swipe-to-dismiss in these areas makes some sense.
From a user’s point of view, I can’t think of any reason NOT to allow swipe-to-dismiss in this area. Perhaps there is something that makes it difficult to program this way? If so, hope it can be overcome! Because this is the thing that most interrupts my reading right now.
I’m not sure if I’ve described this well enough, so please let me know if I should clarify.
I guess I don’t run into this precise issue – although I can imagine and believe how it may bother you and perhaps others! – but I will add another instance in which vertical scrolling (either “pushing the sentence up/down a bit” or dismissing sentence mode) is triggered too easily: when trying to select a multi-line phrase. I find that if I tap and hold on a word, and too quickly drag across the line and downwards toward a second line in order to select a multi-line phrase, then often vertical scrolling will take place instead of multi-line selection.
Thanks, Mark!
What I asked you is related to the iOS, not the web-beta.
On the web version, it does not seem to have big problems for me. Yet, when I use the latest iOS version, several problems happen. Yesterday, when I tried to open the yellow marked words and phrases, I couldn’t do that. Not just the lesson from You-tube import I mentioned above (2). My iOS slows down when I use ver.5. These might be related to my old smartphone.
I’m a little bit behind the times, yet it will take some time to change my phone. I consider using the older version LingQ I can still download on the Internet. This version is only for one language such as German, English, French version, so it is inconvenient, though.
Just wanted to add that the above issue pertains also to swiping UP to fully expand the pop-up.
I’m very sorry but the new app only works on iOS 15 or later so I’m not sure how you are using it to be honest. You should still be using the old app on your device if it doesn’t support iOS 15. You should stop using the beta app from TestFlight as it will only frustrate you.
I think that the app is not correctly recording my words of reading. I know for a fact that I read at least 10k words yesterday (because I read the first five lessons of a book), but the stats in my profile only show 8k. I read the first lesson in the app (and the other 8k on the legacy site), so I think thats why the 2k isn’t showing up.
This is because users have asked for a way to copy the text of the current phrase. You can tap and hold the phrase to see the copy menu. Unfortunately the tap and hold gesture overrides the drag gesture. We can try to see if that can be improved.
Did you complete all of those lessons on the web? The reading only gets counted on web when you complete a lesson.
Ah, I see! Thanks for explaining. It’s always interesting to see the many user wishes you are juggling.
I will of course trust you to make the right decision about this, but in case it’s helpful, here are a few more thoughts (and one bug):
- The bug: for me (using LingQ 5.0.2), the “copy” button that pops up does not actually work – ie, nothing gets copied. Similarly, the “Share…” button next to it does not work – no text is sent to the share menu.
- The “tap and hold” gesture to see the copy menu is not “discoverable” (if that is the right word). Even after fiddling with this part of the definition pop-up for a while, I never realized this was possible; the interface gives no hints either.
- One possible compromise to allow copying text without interfering with the drag gesture is this: add an icon to the right of the text of the current phrase; tapping this icon would copy that text. Here’s a screenshot that shows what I mean: https://i.imgur.com/cOfjVgV.png … It could be a “share” icon (like my crude drawing), or a “copy” icon (like that found on google translate) … The best color might be grey (like the TTS icon always present on the left). Because long phrases get truncated before reaching the right side of the pop-up (as in my screenshot), this icon would not steal space from the text. It would balance nicely with the TTS icon and hardly increase clutter. Its function would be clear and easily discoverable. And it would allow swiping anywhere to dismiss or expand the pop-up.
I’m not sure I followed what you said.
I completed one lesson on the app, and four lessons on the web - but it seemed like only the lessons I completed on the web got counted.
Are you saying that reading doesn’t get counted if I complete a lesson the app?
I should probably let Mark reply, but I think he was trying to verify whether you are sure you pressed the “complete” button at the end of the lessons you read on the web. Otherwise those words would not be counted. I think that’s what he means by “The reading only gets counted on web when you complete a lesson”.
On the app, completing a lesson (ie, pressing the “complete” button) is less important, because the apps are able to count partial progress through a lesson. (This is pretty cool, even if I’m not totally sure how it works.) It’s easy to verify that the app is counting your words: Just check today’s stats, then read some words, then check again.
I could be wrong about all this, of course!
By the way, Velibor, may I ask what the little icon next to your profile pic means? Does it indicate you are a “librarian” here at LingQ, or something like that?
On the app, your reading should be counted in real time. As you read pages, the words read for that page should be added to your words read. Is this not happening for you? Which app version are you using? The beta version or the latest one from the App Store?
