I was just wondering if there is anyone here on LingQ who is using youtube to learn languages or just watch videos in general, who has experienced this common problem with little information. Videos have flawless playback, they download normally but they will stop playing as if the video has ended before it is supposed to end, so the playbar will be at the end of the video. The longer the video is, the more often it stops, and switching between fullscreen and refreshing usually makes the problem occur more often. This is not something that happens often with videos under 10 minutes. Has anyone experienced this and found a workaround?
This happens to me in the afternoon and especially in the evening. I guess it results from too much traffic on the Internet. There are three things that I try. Besure you have the latest version of your browser and of the Flash player, if you have one.
There is an icon on the lower right panel of the Youtube screen that looks like a gear. (To its right there is first an icon that looks like the face of a clock, then there are two rectangles, and finally a broken square for playing the video full screen). This gear-looking icon controls the quality of the video and audio. Left click on the gear and you will probably see a list called Quality of different qualities the video can be played at. Left-click on the lowest quality and resume the video (if it has stopped). Sometimes that helps.
If that does not work, and if I really want to see the video, then I left-click the Download panel that is just below the Subscribe panel. You’ll see several possible download choices, left click on one of them, tell the dialogue box where you want to download the video to, and wait for it to download. Even if traffic is high, usually I can get a successful download. Though it may take a relatively long time.
Forget about it and try it in the morning, the sooner the better.
Thank you, sir. I’m really not looking to sacrifice quality but I think you’re right that it’s related to traffic, because it happens regardless of which browser I’m using. I’ve been viewing videos on Youtube for many hours a week in the past several months, and it’s been an intermittent problem that has spiked recently.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Does anyone know more information about Adobe Flash Player in layman’s terms, specifically how to optimize it for best Youtube video playback?
