I don’t know about it being a “newbie” issue. Seems like a flaw in the way they are trying to assess study time. First of all, how would you even know that is the behavior to begin with. Second of all, many people get up without closing a lesson…to get something to eat, use the bathroom, tend to some sort of issue. Or whatever, that may take minutes or hours. So if just leaving the lesson open is going to log hours that seems like a meaningless statistic and needs to be recording activity throughout the lesson. I suspect that’s what’s intended and the implementation just isn’t correct or broken.
