Starting a diary using google translate

I will wait with corrections until I am able to write a little in Czech on my own. That might start in a few months. Even then, writing correction is more of a random check (pardon the pun) on my Czech. The major benefit of writing is writing, not the correction. The same is true with speaking. I learn mostly from what I hear and read, and trying to apply that to output after a while. Random sampling for correction helps, however, using the language when we are ready, helps even more, in my view.

Is it helpful? Is your language improvement faster and more significabt with this approach?

Okay then, Steve. Here is a creative effort of mine in English, followed by Google Translate’s Russian version:

Dramatic shootout in downtown Vancouver.

Four people were yesterday left for dead, with dozens more injured, after an altercation at a Vancouver lap-dancing bar dramatically escalated into a deadly fire fight.

According to police spokesman, Randy Friedemann, the incident occurred after tempers flared at a booze fuelled meeting between two of the most notorious figures in the international Linguistic Mafia, Steve Linkman and Dublin Benny.

A witnesses on the scene has reported how the situation turned ugly after Benny asserted that his system, “LWT”, was a significant improvement over Linkman’s website, “Linkman.com”. According to the same witness, Benny responded to a “verbal barrage” by pulling a pistol or revolver, at which point he was instantly shot in the head at point blank range by Linkman’s bodyguard, Kid Alex. Many more shots were then fired after the bar’s owner and several bouncers opened up with pump action shotguns, while Linkman returned massive fire with what is believed to have been an AK-47 assault rifle.

According to the police, in the ensuing carnage at least three bystanders were caught in fatal crossfire, while at least ten more were critically injured. Last night police could not confirm whether one of the lap dancers was numbered among the fatalities.

Linkman and Alex are currently still on the run. Police spokesman, Friedemann, was at pains to reassure the public that a massive manhunt is underway: “It’s only a matter of time before get them”, he said. In the meantime members of the public are strongly urged not to approach either man, both of whom are said to be “armed to the teeth and extremely dangerous”.

(I gotta say, having imported the above Russian text to my lessons, I’m not convinced that it’s great Russian!)

I took the liberty of translating Rank’s short story into Polish (via Google Translate, of course) and the result was hilarious - I mean, even more hilarious than the original.

Let me just quote the title: “Dramatic shootout” was rendered into Polish as “Dramatyczne rzuty karne” (eng. “dramatic penalty kicks” - I would associate it with more sport).

I don’t understand Russian, so maybe I’m missing the point. But are you saying this is an example of google translate spitting out garbage? Your English section sounds like bad “newspeak.” The first sentence lacks a verb and the structure is consistently mangled, though it is understandable. I’m assuming that the Russian version looks worse, but what do you expect? If the original is convoluted then naturally the automatic translation is going to be unintelligible.

@kcb

The first “sentence” is in actual fact a title. (You may perhaps have noticed that titles don’t always have a verb?)

Yes, it is meant to sound like newspeak. No, the structure is not “consistently mangled”. (I don’t wish to sound arrogant, but I really don’t see any reason why I would take any English lessons from you!?)

I think you are indeed missing the point.

Hint: it begins with “h”…

I’ve tried German with Rank’s text. The result is:

I don’t know if I should laugh or cry.
One example: “Pains” is translated into “Brot” which means “bread”.
Another example: A lap-dancing bar becomes a bar with a laptop (a computer!).
There are more …
More bad is that I have sometimes no idea about the meaning. All over all if someone would submit this as a writing I didn’t know what to do. The meaning is very unclear, and that is the worst thing. If the grammar is bad, it is one thing. But here I’ve problems to guess the meaning.

@Rank: Nice story!

@Rank I wasn’t giving lessons, only commenting. In my opinion nearly every sentence is needlessly convoluted and so I don’t see the point of the example. There are obvious limits of the translation software. Could you perhaps elaborate on the point without resorting to insults? I gave honest opinions, you are insulting. Of course titles aren’t always sentences.

To tell the truth, I don’t even want to read the German version, because I’m afraid I’ll accidentally pick something up. The point is that we should expose ourself to the language in its natural context and using Google Translate may prove counterproductive if we want to truly learn a language. I wouldn’t rush to write in a foreign language at all costs during first months - I’ve waited patiently with my English until I felt ready and I do believe that even if it’s not perfect, it doesn’t contain numerous nor careless mistakes. Waiting until I was ready did pay off.

I’m writing all this because I’ve noticed that there is a widespread idea on this forum that you should write and speak even before you properly learn a language. And the results are very poor - some people write in English as though they really used Google Translate and it’s not a good thing at all. Learning a foreign language is not a quick fix and trying to rush things will never yield good results.

@Vera

Thanks :wink:

What’s kind of strange about Google Translate is the way that some parts seem basically okay, but then it just completely loses the plot! I agree that it is (at the moment) simply not good enough to help learners in their target languages.

@kcb

Dude, this piece was just meant to be a bit of light humour! It was meant to sound exactly like the work of a hack journalist, not fine English prose! (Nevertheless, I don’t think it is exactly accurate to say that nearly every sentence is “mangled” - however that is not something I wish to argue over.)

Peace. Love. Rock 'n Roll. ;-p

@customic

I agree. I personally would only use Google Translate to translate FROM my target languages into English. (That way I have a chance of spotting the howlers!)

@Rank No hard feelings. I was taking it as a serious example meant to support an argument. If you didn’t mean it that way then I don’t really take issue with it. BTW I don’t like English prose :stuck_out_tongue:

@kcb

It’s cool :wink:

(I shouldn’t have made the remark about not taking lessons - I’m sorry if this sounded arrogant.)

@Vera

You know, I almost feel now like I want to try out my own German translation, and then try putting it through G.T. to turn it back into English!

of course one has to be a little careful with the input. I do not think Ranks albeit creative story is typical diary fare. I am quite happy with the Czech translation I got and have already recorded and imported three diary entries. The mistakes here will no more contaminate my Czech than the mistakes I will make when I eventually write and speak. I will, however, learn a lot of words and expressions that matter to me, and I will practice reading, pronunciation and will listen and notice mistakes. My regular content is my teacher of structure.

If I had to try and do the piece in German, it would sound something like what follows below. (It’s late, I’m tired, and it probably contains lots of dumb mistakes - but I still reckon I’m doing somewhat better than Google-Translate! ;-D)

(Boy, it’s been ages since I’ve written so much German! I’d forgotten just how much I love this language! :-D)

Tatort writers, move over!

I trust Steve if he say something is good I have to agree.

It’s a great idea… I would love to try this in Finnish, but here the language is not supported :frowning:
