Determining the gender of a noun in German can be quite challenging. Selecting the correct article depends on the grammatical gender of the noun:
- der – for masculine nouns
- die – for feminine nouns
- das – for neuter nouns
- die – also used for plural nouns
Luckily, there are some helpful patterns and rules that can make this easier.
In many cases, a noun’s gender can be identified based on: - Its meaning
- Its word ending
