I come from a classical atheist family. Nobody ever talked about religion and the idea of joining one of the religions has never seriously occurred to me. Having nothing to latch onto, my soul left my body at about the age of 16, which is funnily enough exactly when I decided to become a physicist. Now my only regret is that I chose a science that doesn’t allow me to experiment on animals.

Anyway, on another note, I cringe everytime I read the name of Dawkins’ foundation.

One of the things that puts me off this new atheist movement, is how they continually (though not continuously) congradulate themselves for being so logical. If I hear Richard Dawkins’ soft English accent say ‘evidence’ one more time, I might actually convert to Islam!
I wonder why Dawkins is “the world´s most famous atheist”, actually. Maybe it´s part of a big media complot…
THEY want to make atheists look like arrogant, elitist snobs…that´s why THEY prefer to Interview Dawkins. Gawdammed reptiles!

I cannot believe you can interpret what he said in that way. His argument is very clear and the results of the survey they commissioned appears to support his argument very well.

I seem to remember there was quite a little media furore about the interview at the time. I think it’s fair to say that many people (journalists, commentators, et al) understood Dawkins as saying (or at least strongly implying) that knowledge of the Bible, specifically the name of the first of the gospels, was one of the things which are indicative of a person being considered a “real” Christian.
But no matter how we pick over the minutiae, it seems undeniable to me that he was at least saying that some of the people who consider themselves Christians are not, in fact, Christians because of reasons X, Y and Z related to his survey.
So in other words, he was saying that these members of the public may say/think that they are Christians - but he knows better!
To say the least, this is pretty arrogant, IMO.
(It is a bit like saying: ‘oh sure, some people may consider themselves artists, but really they aren’t artists because they can’t mix oil paints’, or whatever…)
I think I should’ve listened to those that say that one shouldn’t speak about religion and politics on the internet. I see that these kinds of conversation draw out the worst from some people .
