I `ve come across a one problem.I always say There are a lot of something without hesitation.But today this question became more interesting. Is it correct to say There are a lot or the correct phrase is There is a lot.because lot is singular.please explain.

Here is how it works: If the noun that follows “a lot of” is plural, use “are a lot of…”
There are a lot of cars in the city.
If the noun that follows “a lot of” is singular, use “is a lot of…”
There is a lot of love in the room right now.
Try to use “many” or “much” in place of “a lot of”.
