New LingQ Library

Please post here on issues related to library

New lessons are not shown on the “New lessons” shelf. I added 2 new lessons. I cannot see them on my account. Also tested with the account of my partner.

I miss “add all” of a collection. It is boring to click so often.

In the German library exists a shelf “Beginner (easy)”. I miss this for French where I’m a Beginner. Why are there different shelves for different languages? When I click on “Beginner (easy)” in German, I expected to see the collections “Who is she?” and “Greetings and goodbyes”. But they are not shown. In the explanations of the update I read “In the bookshelf you can click through the different shelves and look at the top 15 results on each shelf.” Especially for the “Beginner” shelf I would prefer to offer collections.

Also I suggest to have a button “Show more” to get more then 15 results.

Another thing: When I open a collection the number of items is not correct. There is the number for only one site shown.

I suggest for German to create “Other regional accents” to classify accents of items.

It would be nice to have the providers as a filter criteria too, and not only the top five providers. Numbers of items is not a criteria for quality.

Thank you for getting the “Browse full library” function back! That’s nice. Is it possible to have there the option “Show previously selected lessons” that I can see me own lessons in this list? I often used this list to create suggestions for my learners.

When I open the German library I miss the shelf “New lessons”. Maybe this occurs because the last 15 lessons were added by me? Clicking on “Show previously selected lessons” doesn’t bring me this shelf.

Also I miss the “Audiobook” (Hörbuch) shelf in German.

Thank you and keep it coming. We will get there with your help.

Hi Vera,

If you tick the “show previously selected” tick box it should show all of you own lessons. Otherwise, you won’t be able to see them. We had to remove the “Add all” option for technical reasons. However, now on the Lessons page, there is a link to the collection view so you can always easily find your way back to the collection to take another lesson. Plus, as I told you before you can click on the title of the collection in the lesson popup to see the collection. The collection list is paged and you should be able to page through the list of lessons in a collection. We are trying to focus more on lessons in the Library because it reduces the number of clicks required to get to something to study.

If you have specific accents you would like to see, please suggest them here on the forum and people can debate whether they should be added or not. We will add the show previously selected option to the search results page. There are different types and categories in every language which is why the shelves are different in every language. We will eventually unify all types and categories across all languages which will make the shelves the same in each language.

New Zealand accent for the English Library most definitely

Nathan, Would you accept one grouping for NZ and your neighbours, the Ozzies, with all of their faults. In other words Australian is a regional accent of New Zealand English.

hehe… come on!

How about Australasian or ANZ English?

no worries mate!

A neutral grouping would be great. I refuse to say I sound like an Australian!

I would be happy to have them together just as I would have expected to be the case for US & Canada. That was until I noticed that US & Canada have been put down as separate accents. Given that the creators of LingQ are Canadian, I suppose it’s reasonable to expect that they will endeavour to separate themselves from their beloved neighbours to the south.

If you really want to be pedantic, however, you could also have Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Carribean, South African, Zimbabwean, not to mention all the different English accents. Personally, I would be happy with: UK, North American, African, ANZ. But I’m sure whatever is decided will be fine.

How about the possibility of having an “African French” and perhaps even a “Pacific Islands French”?

I’ve been struggling to use the New LingQ Library in these days. New design and color are cool, I like it. New buttons - My collection and My import are convenient.
However, I prefer the old type library to the new one, because I often enjoy browsing some categories and find some treasure for today.

When I use the Brose Full Libary link, I cannot see my imported & shared lessons. I’ve been wondering where are my imported lessons and tried with my new free account. Finally I realize my imported & shared lessons are not on the lists. I will be happy if I can see all of the library including my imported lessons.

On the top of the new library, we can see the top five providers. It would be nice, if you can show us more providers on the list. Top 10 or Top 20 is better, becuase we can exploer the new provider and find the treasure lesson. And when we click a link of the provider name, there are only 12 lessons on the screen. If you can show all with pages or more lessons, I will be happy.

Lastly about the New Lessons, I’ve been wondering this result works properly or not.
Last month, I imported and shared a lot of items from VOA. Everytime I imported them, I checked the images in the library and It was fun to see those my imported items in the library. And I believe many users are waiting for the next new lessons in tthe library. I hope that the lessons in the New Lessons should be the newest 12 or more imported lessons, not at randam.

Wow I worte a lot. Anyway, thank you, Steve, Mark and hard working programers!

@nobou: You see your own lessons with the “show previously selected” tick box.

Sorry Mark, I don’t want to bother you and your hint of click on the title of the collection in a lesson works.

I try to make a grouping of the issues.

  1. About accents in German
In German you have the situation that you have standard German as spoken in Germany, Austrian or Suisse. Besides that you have regional dialects. They are not accepted as own versions of German like the three standard versions. Therefore I had the idea put those hundred of dialects under one category named “Other regional accents”. Another suggestion is “Special dialects”. The number of these dialects is very high. I would not recommend putting all of these dialects in the checkbox because they are not really important. But it is helpful to identify items as items spoken with dialect. For example there are some items in the Swabian dialect in the library.

  2. About showing own lessons
The “show previously selected” tick box works on the shelves site but not on the search site. That is my problem. On the search site is no “show previously selected” tick box.

  3. About collection view
Yes on Lessons page is a link to the collection view. It functions well. But it is not obvious how it works especially for new user.

Another issue related to collections: Providers often have some hints in the title of the collection and people do not see them now. Is it possible to show the description of the collection under the link to the collection?

You write you focus more on lessons in the library to reduce the clicks. I think that the organization of lessons in collections is great and organised the library very well. It’s a great lost to enforce the lessons instead of collections. For example my beginner course is based on working from start to end of the collection. Also it is important for collections like “Who is she”, “Eating out” and other series.

  1. Take all
You wrote “We had to remove the “Add all” option for technical reasons.” Is there a chance to get this function back?

  2. Beginner
When I click on “Beginner (easy)” in a language, I expected to see the collections “Who is she?” and “Greetings and goodbyes”. But they are not shown. In the explanations of the update I read “In the bookshelf you can click through the different shelves and look at the top 15 results on each shelf.” Especially for the “Beginner” shelf I would prefer to offer collections.

  3. “Show more”
It would be nice to have a button “Show more” to get more then 15 results on a shelf. This could lead to the search site, so you do not have to design a new view.

  4. Number of items in a collection
When I open a collection the number of items is not correct. There is the number for only one site shown.

  5. Providers as a filter
It would be nice to have the providers as a filter criteria too, and not only the top five providers. Numbers of items is not a criterion for quality.

  6. Collections as a filter
It would be nice to have the collections as filter criteria.

Some points are raised up by nobuo too. I wrote this earlier. I think it is no problem if it is double

P.S. 10. New lessons
By the way like nobuo said the “New lessons” shelf doesn’t work. I added yesterday two items in the German library. They are not shown. Tested with a test account.

Thanks, Vera.
I’m always impressed by your messages in the forums. I know that ladies talk a lot. (grin) To improve the language, It’s a key to use the learning language here in the forums. You are super! It’s hard for me to catch up with member’s messages.
I’m a infruent writer in the forums, but I often say in my mind, when I read your messages, “Good point!” “Me, too!”, “It"s what I want to say!”.
Anyways, I enjoy reading messages in the forum.

@nobou: Thank you for the compliment. It is not so easy for me to express my thoughts in English as it seems to be. I have to think a lot.

Sometimes I’m surprised about myself how much I have to say  But as you told: I’m a woman.

You’re right. Writing on the forum is a good way to practise English.

Vera,

These are great suggestions and we will no doubt be able to incorporate many of them. I agree with many of them, I might add. We just have to first to get the Filters and other features to work. Once we get the basic features working we can refine and improve.

Re regional accents, whether for Austrialian/NZ or regional accents or even dialects, I have the following to say.

  1. We do not want a filter for which we do not have a lot of content. So since we do not have a lot of NZ or Swabian content, for the time being it is best to use more general Accent categories and wait until we have more of that accent before devoting an accent filter to it. In the meantime nothing prevents the provider from describing the regional accent in the introduction.

  2. I hope that we will have editorial committees for each language and they can decide many of these issues themselves and have access to make changes. We do not have that capability yet.

As with many of these changes, let us get it all working properly and a little faster, then let’s get used to it for a while and then let’s decide what are the most important changes and improvements that need to be made.
