LingQ 5.0 Beta Access

Please post your feedback on the new version in the Beta forum thanks. This is a forum for Beta testers only where our devs and qa testers will also see and respond to your comments.

Thanks Mark. In the future, it might be best to include those instructions in the email.

Are there any screenshots of the UI from 5.0? I would like to see what it looks like before i commit to signing up.

In my opinion, the GUI doesnā€™t look that much different at all. It appears they tried to stick with the same appearance and my understanding is that the rewrite will permit them to make improvements in the future that they just cannot do with the current code.

I tried to find that forum. I searched in ā€œall forumsā€ and found not one forum with the word ā€œBetaā€ or ā€œbetaā€ and I searched in the beta release. It returned zero forums. What is the name of the forum for specifically the beta?

Hereā€™s a link to the correct forum:

It looks like it is not accessible to me. It shows a page without entries (or with gray entries where the content should be like templates). Thanks for the tip though!

You have to have Beta access to see the Beta forum. It is a private forum for our beta testers. If you would like to join the beta, please email support.

It seems I have access to the beta site and I can experiment with (my real data) through the beta functionality. Apparantly you mean something else? Is the beta software different too after this request?

I am looking at this site : Login - LingQ

Iā€™m not sure what you are looking at but it doesnā€™t look like you have access to the beta site or the beta forum. Please email support and ask for access and you will be set up and receive instructions for all of this.

Email support and ask for access to the beta so you can check things out. Mycroft, Iā€™m not sure what you are looking at but the GUI is completely different to version 4.0.

I have but i have to sign up for a premium account in order to do this. I donā€™t really want to pay to be a beta tester so just wanted to see what the layout was like since this is my biggest gripe.

Ah in that case i donā€™t think iā€™ll bother.

Very frustrating. I wish LingQ would stop trying to reinvent the wheel and just ā€˜take inspirationā€™ from other sites and their clean readers and just go with it.

The community translations + word count function are the most important things on here and the vast majority of reviews online complain that the interface is too cluttered and unattractive.

LingQ basically never listen to their customers and their business model of simply making it up as they go along leaves a lot to be desired. The UI design is some of the worst on the entirety of the internet imo and the reader letting you only see a few sentences at a time makes it feel like a flashcard system or a game. People surely just want to feel like theyā€™re reading a book but with the LingQā€™ing functionality?

It really would be so much easier to just revert back to a clean interface like it used to be, all text on one page with ability to scroll, decent font and way to organise your material simply. Thatā€™s literally all that is needed but they seem intent on making it unintuitive and unattractive.

The reader on various other sites is so much better.

LingQ if youā€™re listening, please do away with the mobileapp-like interface on the desktop and just give us a reader like a kindle but with LingQ functionality.

I wish LingQ 5.0 can be faster (Google said the speed is the #1 feature for their Search) and make it easier to edit the text and timestamp.

I import Youtube with auto-generated Japanese caption. This video usually also come with burned-in caption on the video, which provides me some guidance to manual correct those auto-generated caption. However, the current UI / UX makes it harder to do that.

When I import text and audio, itā€™s also non-trivial to edit the align the timestamp. Here is what I expect to work: in the sentence mode, I can play the audio and mark start and mark end.

Itā€™ll be wise to hire proper and enough product managers and UI / UX designs. Still appreciate all the efforts and improvement to the app.

I would think the current implementation for editing sentences would work quite efficiently for you in editing those captions. Click Edit Sentence in Sentence View and then you can click from one sentence to the next as you edit. I assume you would need the video open in another tab. As for time stamping, this can also be done in that sentence edit view. You canā€™t mark the start and end but itā€™s fairly comfortable to click to begin the next timestamp from the previous end stamp and increment by typing or clicking the arrow keys to adjust.
Performance can always be improved and we will continue to work on this.

Thatā€™s a great improvement. A few suggestions:

Now, we need to click the three-dots icon on the top-right and then click ā€œEdit Sentencesā€. To make this frictionless, we can do things like

  • Press a shortcut, letā€™s say e, to enter edit mode.
  • Press control and double click to enter edit mode.

Once I enter the Edit Sentence modal and click the caption. Now, only the caption is highlight and other part is greyed out. It takes me a while to figure out I need to press ā€œEnterā€ or click the ā€œdiskā€ button to complete the edit. My intuition is to press ā€œEscā€ and click elsewhere. I also expect press ā€œTabā€ will edit the next line.

I used it more and here are a few more suggestions

  • Clicking the delete button(which delete one sentence) now takes me back to the Reader view. It would remain in Edit Sentence mode but go back to the previous or next sentence.
  • Provide an option to merge with the next sentence.
  • Provide an option to insert an new sentence.
  • Provide an option to undo a change (this will be complicated to implement)

Thanks, we will continue to improve the editing capability over time. I will add your feedback.

It doesnā€™t look very good. Where is blue bar at the top. ? Very good new apple. Overall it is good. I will test it with pleasure to find more beneficts.

It is working very well in the sentenses mode, more better, maybe I like the other color for the translate text.
