Learning Arabic, my journey of 1001 nights

Still no luck with this? The problems affect Hebrew pdfs as well, so would be nice if they could be solved.

There is certainly a lot of very interesting stuff for Arabic on Amazon. Just one example:

This series does stuff for MSA too.

Have you tried it? I’d like to buy Yacoubian Building as well, my mother read it in French and told me it was very good indeed.

I haven’t tried it yet. If experience is any guide, I should wait until mid-January to give the Canadian postal service time to clear its Christmas backlog.

Found the pdf version and the audio website. http://lingualism.com/shop/arabic/arabic-voices-1/ Unfortunately, the pdf looks as difficult to lingq as any other pdf. :frowning:

Such a good book. Al Aswany is an amazing author. I also recommend Chicago by him.

If anyone finds resources for Arabic roots, please post it here.

I cannot find any books that take Arabic vocabulary at this approach.

(This lists words under roots. Here in the UK It’s pretty much the standard dictionary for learners of Arabic, BTW)

Here’s a very useful resource for learners of Arabic (for beginners as well as for more advanced learners):

https://premium.oxforddictionaries.com/arabic/

You can enter any word, and it detects the conjugation, singular/plural, cases etc.
The root the word belongs to, is also shown, as well as words with the same root. For verbs, a conjugation table is available. Example sentences are also included.

It’s hard to find a good Arabic dictionary, especially for German native speakers. I already have bought Hans Wehr’s German edition, and I’m quite happy with it. I first thought to buy the printed edtion of the Oxford Arabic dictionary:

https://www.amazon.com/Oxford-Arabic-Dictionary-Dictionaries/dp/0199580332

But then I decided in favour of subscribing to the online edition. The price is not cheap, but quite fair since other languages (Chinese, Russian, Spanisch, German, French, etc.) are also included. And you can access to the dictionary from anywhere.

So from now on, I cannot live without it…

Finally tried Jamalon. Seems they ship from Jordan via DHL, which is where most of the money goes I presume. The binding for Yacoubian building is rather low quality, but the print seems readable. Given the level of English I’m seeing, one may want to read it in translation first before attempting the Arabic. Now definitely want to read Chicago.

Thanks for the feedback!
My father went to Algeria and brought me various books by Amin Maalouf (very good French writer, I recommend in any language), and The Prophet, by Khalil Jibran. I’ll read these and will then try to find Yacoubian Building.

Hi Steve,

while watching your video “Too Old to Learn a Language?” I heard you were learning Arabic. LINQ was good while studying German with lots of high quality short content to listen-read. But Arabic is not still active in Linq, I really keep waiting the time when it will be activated.

I learn Arabic as well and would like to share a linq (don’t know if somebody shared it previously) for Medina Arabic, I really find it useful. Sadly it’s mostly grammar but very good-simple methods with daily phrase. I don’t have much time to study big grammar books so Medina Arabic method is somewhat easy.
