Is this a bug or would this be interpreted as a word in Japanese?

Surely this is a bug with seperating words? Mind you I’m still new to Japanese, this might genuinely be how it works.

Yeah, that’s definitely a bug.

Unrelated to the bug, but your display is showing a Chinese font instead of a Japanese one. That’s probably how your device is set up to work, and it’s a common occurrence for beginners. Look up in your smartphone configurations for an option to add Japanese as a secondary language, otherwise it tends to default to Chinese script.

You will know it’s correct when this character

The character is 直 if you want to check in your browser as well.

Wow thanks, I’d never have guessed that was a thing. Are there many characters that differ, and are the differences big?

Most are the same. Some have minor changes, like a slanted line x a straight line, as in 言.

直 is known for being the most distinct one.
