Surely this is a bug with seperating words? Mind you I’m still new to Japanese, this might genuinely be how it works.
Yeah, that’s definitely a bug.
Unrelated to the bug, but your display is showing a Chinese font instead of a Japanese one. That’s probably how your device is set up to work, and it’s a common occurrence for beginners. Look up in your smartphone configurations for an option to add Japanese as a secondary language, otherwise it tends to default to Chinese script.

Wow thanks, I’d never have guessed that was a thing. Are there many characters that differ, and are the differences big?
Most are the same. Some have minor changes, like a slanted line x a straight line, as in 言.
