iOS v 5.0.0 (6). Thx for this Update. The Playlist Counter seems to be working/updating again, and iOS versions sync. However, there are (new) problems with the Web version.
For eg, whereas one audio Track shows (12x) in iOS - the Web now shows [ 11.9827043954283x ]! Whist I’m impressed by the 14-digit accuracy, it does seem problematic when a simple Integer is expected.
Please advise if a screenshot would be helpful,

Great, thx. There are some additional, related aberrations in the latest iOS beta.
For example, the playlist-counter shows (11.9x, 11.6x, 11.2x) etc for some completed tracks. Thou I don’t know how this is affecting the general-progress counters.
For reference, those tracks were completed in iOS/5, and the playback speed was left at the default (1.0x).
using ipad mini 6.
After reading a lesson. The “times read” counter is going up in odd increments…1.1x, 0.4x.
On the web, it now shows 7649.99998174544 words of reading. ipad mini 6, interestingly shows 7649 even though it seems to be the culprit =).
I’m not sure if it’s related, or a separate issue, but after reading these lessons there and then going back to my android phone, I can’t read the new lessons in this same series. They come up blank. Also, although the stats are updated on the ipad mini 6, the android version does not seem to have recognized that they were read (missing several thousand words of reading and 100+ known words). I’ll report on the android thread regardless. It’s not only the ones I read on the ipad mini 6 though so it probably isn’t related, but I hadn’t had any issues there for awhile though so I was surprised to see I could see any text in these lessons, so just wanted to mention in case there could be a relation.
update: I can only not read (in Android), the lessons opened on the ipad mini yesterday. All other lessons, even if they show the wrong yellow, blue, white count of 0 0 0, will open. So it might be more directly related to this update than I thought. I can read all of these lessons on the web, however.

Yes, we have some refinements to make there. We are switching from tracking reading and listening by lesson, to tracking it in real time by page read and actual time listened. This is why your numbers are being changed. Give us a little more time to iron things out.
Sounds like a cool, useful change. Thanks for putting the work into this aspect of tracking!
Flashcards on iOS:
- Can we have an option to adjust font size on flashcards? Or maybe font size on flashcards could somehow adjust according to the font size set in the reader preferences? The phrase text especially is way too small for me to read comfortably.
- Flashcards (and reverse flashcards) do not consistently honor all the settings regarding what should be shown on the front and back of the cards. For example, I don’t seem able to turn off the phrase.
- When the status bar is shown on the front of the card,I can change the word’s status and dismiss that card with one tap on the new status. However, if I do not want to change the word’s status, I can’t tap on the current status to dismiss the card. Rather, I need to flip the card and then hit the X or check mark buttons. I wish I could tap on the current status to dismiss the card. Steve himself claims that when he uses flashcards, he shows everything on the front and just taps through his cards. The change requested here would make that an easier process.
- The Fluent Forever app has a simple gesture-based interaction model for interacting with flashcards that could work well in LingQ: tap anywhere to flip card; swipe left to answer “wrong”; swipe right to answer “correct”. Also, cards slide off screen toward the corresponding direction. (For example, cards answered correctly slide off screen toward the right, following the gesture, and towards the direction of the “correct” button.) Perhaps these features could be added to the wishlist?
Reader on iOS:
- In Korean, words get split between lines very frequently. When the user taps on the top part of the word, the pop-up obscures the bottom part. To avoid this, it would be nice if there were always one extra line of text between the selected word and the pop-up. Even for languages that do not split words so often, this would have the extra benefit of letting the user see a bit more context for the selected word.
- In Korean, words also get split between pages. It would be great if LingQ could avoid this.
I can confirm that any lesson I’ve opened with this new version seems to “corrupt” opening it in the android version. The text simply does not show up in the android version. Other lessons that I haven’t opened in the ipad open fine in android. I’m not sure if there’s something that’s updated on the lesson or my profile/plus lesson that is “carried along” between versions that’s doing this?
I have looked at the lesson on the web and gone to “edit lesson” and everything otherwise seems fine.
Also it it potentially has corrupted course view for a book I imported (only in android version). None of the lessons show up in the android version anymore.
I think it’s all related somehow.
- I’m encountering frequent crashes, usually just when browsing the library, and also once recently when looking at my challenges. I don’t know how to trigger these crashes. I haven’t encountered any while using the reader.
- If I mark notifications as read on iOS, and subsequently log into LingQ on the web, the notifications still show as unread.
Looks great guys! Just have a few suggestions regarding the Japanese Reader
- Even with “Show spaces between words” turned off there seems to be a gap between words. Prefer the words to be together like the current version (4.8.24), as it looks more realistic.
- Would like to be able to read in landscape view if possible.
- The audio symbol in the center of the screen is a too large. About half the size would be a lot better.
Thanks, any more info on the crashes will help us tracking them down. Will look into the notifications.
- I don’t really see a gap if spacing is turned off. Sometimes the transliteration may force some spacing but otherwise, the spacing isn’t there when it’s turned off. What device are you seeing this on? Does it occur for all texts?
- That will not be possible at least for the foreseeable future.
- Is that in Sentence View? The bigger size does make it easier to tap. What reason do you have for wanting it smaller?
- I am using an iphone xs. It looks like it happening on all texts. I am just comparing it the previous lingq version which is neat and compact. I can send a few screenshots.
- Yes, in sentence view. It just seems excessively large when reading long text sentences. In saying that, it is not a major problem.
Youtube video player is a great addition.
Lingq keeps crashing though. No clue why.
I’m on an XS as well, although that shouldn’t matter at all really, and any spaces I’m seeing are not actually where the splits are. If you can send a screen shot with a link to that lesson, that would be great.
I’ve been using Beta on my IPhone XR for a few months with mostly positive experiences. I’ll share a few thoughts as well as recent issues I’ve had.
- I miss the option to read in “full text mode”. I primarily read imported e-books (parsed into digestible 2K word “lessons”) while listening to the complementary audiobook. Please consider preserving that functionality - why was that feature removed? Attempting the same with external e-readers is more cumbersome given the added interface.
- You’ve done a great job minimizing ”phantom” unknown words in imported lessons. This was a big issue for me initially and I now rarely experience the issue.
- Love dark mode, so much easier on the eyes. That said, sometimes it’s harder to distinguish known words from L3 and L4 Lingqs which show as a faint yellow on my screen. Are options to personalize those colors?
- Really miss the option to access my profile (e.g. words read for the day) from the main page. This may only be a restriction in mobile (I don’t ever use in desktop mode). Was that functionality removed or, rather, has the access point change?
- Beta’s routinely crashing when viewing full courses vs. individual lessons. This started for me 3 days ago. Something to look into.
All in all, positive experiences. I sincerely appreciate the effort upgrading the software which, no doubt, is no small feat.

- We have removed the full text option since it always felt a little strange the way it was implemented. But, we now have the Listening Mode option which you can find by expanding the audio player. It shows you the full text and will actually also scroll along highlighting the current sentence as the audio plays. You can also get auto TTS audio for imported lessons without audio. This has just been implemented on the iOS beta app.
- There were strange things that happened with the odd word before. We have done some things to hopefully reduce or remove this possibility.
- Yes, it can be hard. More customization in the future may come including choosing colours like you ask for.
- If you tap on the bar showing your streak days and coins, it should open your profile stats. Or, are you looking for something else?

Thanks for the response Mark! I was unaware of the new access points for full text mode and profile stats. I like them.
I have an additional issue I forgot to mention. When creating Lingq’s the suggested Ling’s sometimes contain erroneous tags. In 4.0 I was able to delete them but I’m unable to in 5.0. Can this be fixed? Or is this user error on my part?
There are automated verb tags which appear in many languages. The root form and tense. You can hover on these tags to see the delete x.
