I’d recommend not worrying about your stats so much ( or steves for that matter) and just concentrate on READING and Lingqing. And then Add alot of FlashCard Reviews ( have you tried Memrise.com ? ) + on top of that do your usual listening ( or more)
Just listening isnt enough for comprehension. YOu end up hearing the sounds pretty well but you cant understand what they are saying. Words dont just magically become “known” just by listening… You might be able to pick it out of the bunch but if you dont know the meaning of the word by the context you will need to have read it/looked it up somewhere a bunch of time ( some words take longer than others) to eventually ingrain itself into your brain
Thats exactly where I’m at with korean. I’ve practiced listening for years and now I live in korea and korean is all around me. I can break down the sounds pretty well. But theres still ALOT of vocab I just dont understand even though i can pin point it out from what I hear… I’ve Started doing some flashcards recently with Memrise and I’ve found that that has been helping me a great deal… Normally I HATE flashcards and get bored quickly but I thought Memrise is pretty fun to flashcard with… There are other platforms out there like Ainki , Lingq Flashcards and many others…
Just letting you know whasts been working for me lately… might not be the case for you but worth a try… Especially if what your doing right now isnt yield results. When that happens I always think its time to try a new approach/ add somethign to your study methods to make things more interesting
Thanks Vera. The tables are interesting to look at. My activity score is not so far below the bottom of the table, so I think I will try to get myself onto it by the end of the month. I am fourth in the German table, which is nice to see.
I have another question. I kind of understand the ‘Rankings’ thing since it just ranks people by activity score. Does that correspond to everybody over the entire website? The same with the ‘LingQs’ table underneath. Is that everybody over the entire website? The person at the top of the table has a score of 126,679. Does that mean they have LingQed 126,679 words in all languages since they began using the website?
It has been my experience that people who are putting a lot of time into listening but not improving at all actually have a vocabulary problem. Others have already mentioned, but bumping up your LingQs and known words should really help you out in the listening efforts.
@Colin - That’s correct about the total LingQs number. If you adjust the filters to show you those you are following only or those studying specific languages only, from specific countries only, you can drill down to subsets of the rankings.
I drop some lines here to share the experience in learning English just by listening skill. I started learning ages ago but it was not until two years ago I paid attention to listening skill thanks to lingq. after two years following this method I realize that listening is the best way to learning a language, simply and naturally a baby spends his first two years to listen then he can speak some easy syllables at the age from two to three years old, at last he can make a progress at the age of four at this phrase he can speak confidently, clearly.
in my school time I was taught grammar and vocabulary, at school at home that was a burden to me, how can we remember all the single world in the dictionary and grammar rules in all grammar books?what would happen if you stop seeing them in one month? they completely disappear out of your brain. like other students I paid no or little attention to listening skill because a simple reason was that we didn’t take any tests for exams on listening. at last I changed the method to restart with listening. now I download and listen everything I love just the simple rhyms for kid, some songs, englishpods, etc…my english is better now
