How many languages can one learn? (by alleray)

My goal: achieving fluency in Russian (просто достичь беглости на русском языке)

My goals:

Fluency in: Dutch, Yiddish, French, Latin, Hindi, German, Polish, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Hebrew, MSA, Egpytian Arabic, Mandarin, 1 Australian language, 1 North American language, 1 Khoisan language, Indonesian, Turkish.

High level reading and intermediate speaking: Italian, Frisian, Judeo-Spanish, Swedish, , Russian, Icelandic, Swahili, Bengali, Vietnamese, Korean, Tamil, Kurdish.

Reading only: Sanskrit, Pali, Classical/Koine Greek, Classical Arabic, Akkadian, Sumerian, Ancient Egyptian, Aramaic, Biblical Hebrew, Old Norse, Avestan and Old English.

Speaking dominant: Egyptian Arabic, Low German.

Intermediate all-round: Maori, Burmese, Japanese, Thai, Romani…probably some others.

I’m probably 5% towards reaching this goal right now and I know that I will speed up as I go. The first few seem to be the hardest. I don’t doubt that I can do it. Piece of cake.

Hey, why is Italian the only “big” Roman languages to be in the second group? :frowning:

I should also set such a list of goals for my languages. I’ll think about it later…

That’s a fair list, Imyirtseshem! I reckon your goals might change after the first couple, though. To me that list sounds like 30-40 years of intensive study. In either case, I look forward to following your progress post-Dutch.

Italian is the king of the Romance languages and surely belongs in group one…?

It’s one hulking hunk of a target list! (I like the way you are content just to READ Akkadian! :-D)

Imyirtseshem, that’s quite ambitious!
