Help us make LingQ better!

The edit function has now appeared and is working for me now. Thanks, Mark!

Hi,
I wrote ā€œwrongā€ because, when I studied Latin in national high school, I studied Mediavel Latin because itā€™s simpler ā€œversionā€ to linking to actual Romance languages and because Mediavel Latin is the evolution of Classical.
For example, my birth-region is called ā€œCalabria BruZiaā€, that derives from Latin word ā€œBruTiaā€ whereā€™s the transformation from /T/ to /Z/ sound.

If you note, in Lingq there are some texts about Church (title ORATIO FATIMAE) that is of Church, but pronunced in Classical Latin as Julius Caesar could pronunce Curch texts  .

Itā€™s not dramatic, for me itā€™s OK to study Latin with classical (and not Mediaeval) pronunciation, but when I listened the ORATIO FATIMAE first time I was confused about pronunciation, but itā€™s only a situation of habit.

@RicardoA - Great. Sorry for the confusion. You should all see the Edit button now. We had it hidden while we were testing and had forgotten to unhide it for everyone.

  1. Yes, thatā€™s true. How to get users to understand what they are looking at can be tough. In the end, once you are resorting to filters and checkboxes to see the Feed, you will dramatically reduce the number of users who see it and it ends up probably being as complicated. I would think removing the Library tab completely and relying on the Search box in the Feed to search the Library would make more sense and is something we are looking at. Since the default Library view is essentially static, it makes sense to only show it when a user searches. We have some ideas here and are working on improving usability. We do get what you are saying and know it can be improved. Thanks again for your suggestions. This all helps us as we try to make things better.

  2. If you view the Statistics tab, it is remembered so you no longer have to see the avatar if you donā€™t want to. That widget is customizable so you can see what you want to see. Of course, we can look at which tab to show by default to new users. We typically do a/b tests instead of usability tests since it allows us to see what large numbers of users will do when presented with different options.

Thank you.

Hi Mark, Iā€™ve been spending 10 hours a day on LingQ for the last 3 months and my knowledge is growing rapidly. I am currently partially focussing on subjunctive mood and as my knowledge grows I need to edit my phrase linqs, also to review the conjugation table link. I find today that my Linqs are all ā€œfixedā€ and I canā€™t do anything with them, this is severely debilitating! Please advise.

Hi Pete, Iā€™m afraid editing LingQs isnā€™t possible. Edited LingQs no longer show up in lessons since they are no longer in the lesson once change. What exactly do you need to edit them for? You could always re-import them in edited form in the Vocabulary section. Or, export the list of phrases you want to edit, then batch edit them and re-import them. As for the conjugation table link, you should see your conjugator in list of All Dictionaries although if looking at the phrase, you will have to adjust the term you are looking up to be the verb.

A linqd verb now no longer gives access to ā€œall dictionariesā€, yesterday I could edit my links, add a reference note, fix a typo, now I cannot.
That hasnā€™t made LingQ better for me!

Nothing has changed there. Perhaps you accidentally closed the editing mode. Just click the arrow to the left of the translation to expand it again.

My Bad! du hast rechts. Vielen Dank!

Hi, another question about Latin section: I noted that the texts have in a row the latin version and in the next the english text. For me this is a bit confusing when I have to create lingq: itā€™s possible to show only the Latin text, evenutally allowing the print of the English translation?

Unfortunately, the lesson provider has created those lessons that way. We actually donā€™t want providers putting English in the lessons for exactly the reason you mention. We have asked that provider to do as you suggest and move the English into the Translation tab. Perhaps if you ask him on his profile wall, it might help to convince him to do that! Otherwise, there is not much you can do Iā€™m afraid but choose other lessons.

Hi, I would appreciate that, when I receive the email with my lingqs, I can see the whole sentence with the word to study, not the alone word.

When I outline a unkwoned word reading a text, in the exercice Lingq show me the sentence (context) where the word is used. If is it possibile to customize, in the profile of the user, the format of the mail?
I think something similar to a tabel with 3 columns

  1. word to study (as now)
  2. translation of this word (as now)
  3. the sentence

Alternatively, I would like to read only two columns

  1. sentence with unkwoned word in bold, outlined or differente colour)
  2. translation (as now)

My problem is that I find difficulties to remember the whole word in flashcard model.

Thank you

Hi,

Iā€™m afraid we arenā€™t able to send the phrase along with the Daily Email. Because the phrase can vary so much in length it would just make the layout awkward. However, if you click through from the email, you can adjust what you see in the Activities on the application. You can show any of the Phrase, Translation or Term on the front and any of them on the back of the flashcard. Just click on the Settings once you open your Review session.

This is probably going to sound really horrible, but when searching for courses, you can ā€˜filter by providerā€™ if you want to see all the courses that one particular person has shared, but there seems to be no way to filter negatively by provider - say, if thereā€™s someone whose voice you just really donā€™t enjoy the sound of, or find it hard to make sense of, so that you can choose any course not by that person. Is that a function that is available that I am not seeing, or one that is not there?

Ok, thank for the response, but Iā€™m getting wrong or this is a bit opposite to that Steve Kaufmann says in the youtube video about necessiy to learn words in the context and not alone?
If itā€™s impossibile to put the phrases in the mail, is it possibile, please, to put the phrase in the ā€œreviewā€ phase, instead of single alone word?
Iā€™m struggling in reviewed exercise because sometimes I remember a synonym or a similar concept and not the correct meaning of the examined word.

That isnā€™t possible Iā€™m afraid although it is something we are considering for the Feed. Probably not something we would be able to add in the Library search.

When Steve suggests learning in context he is referring to learning from the lessons. You see your yellow LingQs in all lessons and every time you see them, you are reviewing them in context. In the first lesson in which you see them and in all future lessons. If you choose to review your Daily LingQs, you are no longer reviewing in context but you are reviewing these individually.

This can also be helpful but we donā€™t recommend doing this for all your LingQs since you should have far too many LingQs to review in this way. You will learn more words by simply reading and moving on to new lessons where important words will reappear, than you will learn by drilling and using the review activities. Use the activities to focus on words and phrases that you find very important as a supplemental way to help learn them.

I tried out the web and iOS interface.

I do like the concept but the design is terrible. At the beginning i thought it was an application for kids only.

  • The avatar taking so much space (and even existing!!!)
  • The colours,
    ā€¦

On the good side the content is great and everything seems to work fine. I hope you fix the UI to a more modern, less childish and better use of the space.

Thanks

Sorry, I would notice a thing: in lesson ā€œPars I (prima)ā€ of course ā€œLatin for Beginners - Salutare et valedicere (Greetings and goodbyes)ā€, at first page, I listen the whole text and the classic pronunciation is correct (for example, VALE is pronunced /VALE/ ), but when I surf between blue worlds (pronunciation in isolation) and I try to listen to the pronunciation, I head an English-style pronunciation (for example /VEIL/). This is a bit confusing. How does it fix?
