Getting started in Japanese

Where do you start?

I went to the library and it all shows up as sort of numbers on my screen. I know nothing about Japanese, but I think it’s meant to look prettier than that. What do I need to install before the stuff in the library and in the Japanese forums displays properly on my screen?

Aha! Thank you! I was worried that blindly messing about with the language settings might stop Russian displaying correctly, but it all looks fine.
