I’m wondering how the Friends page activity filter works?
When I filter for Korean Language why does the activity feed still show msgs from NON korean learners?
The filters work fine to look at the activity score/ lingqs on the right side. It will only list korean learner stats.
However why not the same thing for the activity feed??
IF i put the filters to ALL languages I get more activity feed. If i set it to korean it should technically just show activity from korean learners?
If so, why do i see random feed activities from people learning english, people looking for Portuguese tutors , japanese learners ect…?
just curious how the filters work because they dont seem to be working for me other than the activity score/lingqs…
Hmm, it should only be showing activity from users who have Korean as one of their active languages, but it seems this is not the case in some situations. We’ll look into this.
I should note that it will still show activities from learners who are studying Korean and other languages, since each post doesn’t require you to select a specific language that it relates to.
interesting. Thought that was the case too. i looked at the profiles of the people who are showing up and theres no sign of them actively studying korean or them having tried to study korean before…
Not a big problem. I was just wondering =)…
@keroro - In fact, the language filter filters everything on the Friends page with the exception of the messages. That is how it is designed. It is not obvious that learners of one language only want to see posts from other learners of that language since the posts are, for the most part, unrelated to the language of study. If you want to only see posts from a particular group of members, you should follow them and then choose to filter by those you are following.
Thanks but I still dont understand If i’m filtering for Korean why does it show msgs from people who arn’t studying korean?
For example. If i filter for korean why do i see Friendmann’s posts on the feed??? As far as i know hes only studying chinese at lingq…
I understand that the system cant parse out posts unrelated to korean however i dont understand why its showing me posts from people who arent studying korean…
I thought the filter would filter out everyone and only show posts of people studying korean ( obviously these people study other languages aswell so it wouldnt filter out posts unrelated to korean…which i understand… )
you know. the more i play with the filters… I dont understand how it works… it seems to be buggy for me…
No matter what language I filter. Friedmann is showing up in the activity… Does this mean hes studying all the languages at lingq?? If hes not … then theres something wrong with the filters…
I would expect the filters to filter friedmann out if hes not studying the paticular language that im filtering for…
@keroro - I never said messages would get filtered out. I said messages are not affected by the language filter. If you untick “Messages” in the sidebar, then you will see that everything else filters by the selected language.
I see …i have to uncheck Messages… that seems to work how i expect it to now…
Still WEIRD though… why aren’t messages affected by the language filter?
The way i see it. When i filter for a specific language i expect to only see messages from people who are studying that filtered language. Obviously those people might or might not have posts related to korean…
regardless… Its really no big deal. Ill just untick the msg box and the filter works exactly as i expect it to… Thanks… I didnt notice those boxes before.
As Mark says, it’s probably best to just follow the people who have interesting posts. The language filter is more intended to direct you to milestones, lessons and conversations which have a definite language categorization to them. We want to promote the messages more, since they don’t have to be related to a specific language and encourage more interaction.
Well, Thing is, theres no one in paticular that i want to “follow”… I just wanted to check out those who are studying korean in a general way… As I said, my expectations were If i filter by language i would expect to ONLY see milestones, lessons , conversations As well as “messages” from users who are studying korean ( im not saying the messages have to be korean related but i expect the user to be studying korean at least… He could be posting about a portugese lesson that he took but at least hes a person studying korean)… I guess the way I’m thinking, It just doesnt make sense for the system to show everyones messages if you just want to filter “korean”. BUt that might be a fault in the way I’m thinking … I get that you want to promote the messages more but i feel like those should show up if everything is set to “all” for languages, countries etc… If i click on korean than it should only show messages, lessons , conversations etc of people who are studying the langage you are filtering… Thats how i see it…
anyways Like i said, Ill just untick the message box and it works as i want it… =) no problem…
