Joe Gargery says the above in GREAT EXPECTATIONS. I wonder what “pay back” means in that context.

If you borrow money from someone, you have to pay them back.

“To make reparations” perhaps is another way to put it.

He is saying that money can not fill the void which the loss of the child has left.
