I often think it is not convenience to read meaning of a previous saved LingQ in a single line. I have to drag my mouse to right to see the meaning. I personally like a larger space for Hint, specially when the word have many meanings.
Because I can’t say it express my thought clearly enough, I just draw it.
voila!!
1)moving Dictionary, Examples, List, Tutor, and Delete from top to left, and exclude the text.
Reason: The vertical space is precious. The icons is well designed. Though, it’s essential to have aiding note when mouse is hovering over icons for new members.
new buttons: “clear” button: click the button will clear all text; click the “copy” button to copy the definition from the right side. It’s especially useful when you want to copy the whole paragraph.
Switch the Hint and Phrases by clicking each tab. I think it is technically possible to do it in a lightning speed without any “loading” message.
This is another version which didn’t change the “LingQ” button:
I realized that any change of this part will have intense impact to us, so please share what you think.
I like the mockups you did! I do a lot of those kinds of mockups myself so I appreciate when someone else does the same! By the way, what did you use to make the mockups?
We are going to make improvements to the widget in the next few weeks so now’s a good time for suggestions. I like the icons on the left hand side. You’re right about the vertical space being an issue. Especially on lower resolutions. Things are going to be a little different with our new widget so all of your suggestions won’t apply. Regarding the size of the Hint and Phrase boxes, we deliberately don’t want them to be too long. Especially since we want user hints to be shared and to be practical in the Vocabulary list and on Flashcards. It is not meant to be a complete definition; it is meant to be a hint to help you remember the term. You can always check the dictionary for the complete definition. Just as the phrase is not meant to be too long either.
The “Clear” button is possible but not likely since you can just ctrl-a delete to get rid of previous text. The Copy feature would be great and we would have copied the definition automatically already if we were able but the reality is that it is not that easy given the variability of the dictionary and we are not going to do it. Our goal is to have User Hints for all terms eventually which you can more or less automatically add to your LingQ widget. It is there where the automation will occur.

I totally understand your point of keep the same length of the Hint and Phrases restraint. However, I still prefer a bigger boxes. Maybe I didn’t describe my opinion clearly so that you misunderstood. I said the bigger area for the Hint boxes dose not mean that I need more characters. It is just not inconvenience when you want to see the whole text you saved. Please reconsider about this. I also really like to hear how other members’ feel about this.

You are right. After I finished it, I felt the “clear” and “copy” buttons are a little bit unnecessary. It’s somewhat contradictory (I don’t know if it is a proper word) that I sometimes don’t like the automatically added definitions. That’s why I thought it may be nice to have a clear button. It’s nice to have that, but my Longman Dictionary seems always have a simpler and more clear definition.
And finally, although I’m learning Photoshop, I made the two pictures with the simplest software: MS painter. (Sigh…I got to be more disciplined.) Sorry about the grammar errors. I have watched my thousands of points expire. ><
I see what you’re saying with the hint and phrase. We’ll look into it. It’s especially relevant at lower resolutions where the Hint and Phrase fields are shorter.
Too bad you didn’t submit your forum posts and use up those points before they expired!
